Ciarra Black is a U.S. producer and DJ based in Berlin. Born in New Jersey, her initial tastes were informed by the local music scene in neighboring Philadelphia, attending punk, noise and dance music events from a young age. It was there she formed the duo Appetite with Jane Chardiet (Ascetic House) and began DJing at local underground dance venues. She moved to New York in 2012, quickly becoming a sought-after booking at venues such as Bossa Nova Civic Club, Good Room and various warehouse raves throughout Brooklyn. In 2013 she began her monthly event series “No-Tech,” which later developed into a label showcasing underground techno and experimental electronic producers from New York and throughout the U.S.
She has performed at countless venues in the U.S., Europe, and beyond — highlights of which are MoMa PS1 (New York), Säule at Berghain (Berlin), Electrowerkz (London), Sound of Stockholm Festival (SE) and Unsound Dislocation Festival in Yerevan, Armenia. Her DJ sets combine several elements of her multi- faceted influences — driving kicks, mid western rave, hypnotic industrial, and experimental synth and noise elements. Her live hardware sets are one-of-a-kind improvised soundscapes – rhythmic and noisy, visceral and heady, channeling her influences past, present, and future into a sound that is truly her own.
Ciarra has been based in Berlin since 2018 where she has been developing an upcoming release and newly formed label, Pendulum Recordings, launching in the fall of 2019. Since her move to Berlin she has also begun collaborations involving A/V, sound design and scoring with several other EU artists, with debuts for these projects coming in 2020.
